Opening Receptions A Huge Success

After an impossible-to-judge contest last December, our 42 winning images in the DCist Exposed Photography Show were framed and hung at Long View Gallery for more than 1,200 guests to gawk at over two packed nights of receptions this week.

Just reminder that the show will be at Long View Gallery through April 7, free during their regular hours, Wednesday though Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 5 p.m. (The gallery occasionally closes for events, and is closed this Sunday for Easter.) If you are interested in purchasing a photo, inquire while you’re at the gallery or fill out our contact form. You can still buy a 2013 exhibition program at MagCloud for $10, as well as our 2012 program and 5th year anniversary edition (or save on shipping and buy them at the gallery this Saturday only).

We have some major gratitude to dole out—putting together these exhibitions requires a massive amount of help from a massive number of people.

Our DJs, who’ve spun at Exposed for years, were amazing once again. Check out more of DJ Sequoia’s and v:shal kanwar’s tunes at their Soundcloud pages.

This was our first year having a food sponsor, so great thanks go to Farm to Feast and Alexis Starkey for taking on the challenge of supplying treats for all the Exposed guests. Her D.C.-inspired finger foods were a great way to keep with our community celebration and delicious to boot.

The selection of beers from locals 3 Stars Brewing kept everyone going through the four-hour parties and many of us coming back for more, and double thanks to them for fitting us into their impossibly packed schedule during Craft Beer Week.

BaseCamp DC does a fantastic job supplying our hand-outs and posters, and Johanna Ostrich designs our beautiful exhibition programs.

We have a huge number of DCist staffers, friends, and photography supporters who lend their time to make Exposed happen. These folks poured the beers, frosted the cookies, installed the show, cleaned up trash, and so much more. Our unending thanks go to Jennifer Wade, who truly went above and beyond, along with John Fleury, Angela Kleis, Nikolai Konick, Kelly Rand, Alex Howe, Meaghan Gay, Sriram Gopal, Aaron Morrissey, Valerie Paschall, Lis Grant, Ben Freed, Alicia Mazzara, Martin Austermuhle, Josh Novikoff, Catherine McCarthy, Brian Mosley, Amit Mehta, Lynne Venart, Sanjay Suchak, and the wonderful staff at Long View Gallery. (Oh boy, did we leave anyone off??) DCist Exposed was organized by Heather Goss and James Calder.

Lastly, thank you to the entire local photography community. Every year it’s such a pleasure to work with so many talented people, who are so gracious, and as excited about putting in the work to make Exposed happen as we are, and we were thrilled to meet many of you for the first time last night. Our 8th annual contest will open this December, so keep your eye on DCist, and go pick up that camera!

The 2013 Show Opens Tomorrow!

2013 Exposed Sponsors & Partners

2013 Exposed Sponsors & Partners

We hope you locked down your tickets early, because both of the opening receptions for the 7th annual DCist Exposed Photography Show are sold out! To the 1,000 of you that snagged them, we’ll see you this Tuesday and Wednesday between 6 and 10 p.m. at Long View Gallery, 1234 9th Street NW. The gallery is an easy two block walk from the Mt. Vernon Square / Convention Center metro.

There will be tickets available at the door for $15, but advance ticket holders have priority, and there can only be 500 people in the gallery at a time (don’t worry guys, it’s a biiiig gallery). If you can’t attend the receptions, the exhibition is open for free during Long View’s normal business hours (note: the gallery is occasionally closed for events, and Easter Sunday), through April 7.

Once inside, enjoy the 42 awesome photographs featuring the life and culture of the Washington, D.C. area. You can get a preview of the show at our Flickr pool and with all the photographer-made posters featured in Photo of the Day since last week. All the photographs are for sale at prices affordable for a first-time art buyer. Why not finally buy some real art for your walls featuring the city you love? You can purchase them during the receptions at the table near the frame shop, or by emailing dcistexposed[at]gmail.com before the show closes on April 7. Beautiful color exhibition programs, designed by Johanna Ostrich, will also be available at the gallery for $10, along with the 5th anniversary edition for $20 (or both for $25); or buy them online here.

While you’re making your way around the gallery, stop by the open bar for one of 3 Stars Brewing fantastic draft beers— Peppercorn Saison, Sea Change Pale Ale and Southern Belle Imperial Brown—and some rarely available cask brews. (Red wine, soda and water will also be available, but seriously, try the beer!)

For the first time we’ll have an array of goodies for you to eat, too. Farm to Feast will be working through the night with some Exposed volunteers (thank you, volunteers!) to provide treats that embrace D.C. cuisine, including doro wat stuffed potatoes, bean and cheese pupusas, mini crab balls, southern corn fritters, Asian tofu lettuce wraps, half smokes, and some sweet D.C. flag cookies to finish it all off.

We always hear great compliments about DJ Sequoia and v:shal kanwar, so we’re excited to have them back again to provide music for the receptions.

Additional thanks go out to BaseCamp DC for providing all our printed materials, and Ten Miles Square for sponsoring the show.

Thank you to all our sponsors who provide such wonderful accompaniments for the opening receptions, and to the many, many volunteers from DCist and the photography community who dedicate a significant amount of time to pull this all off. Finally, congrats to all the photographers who will be exhibited this year — we’re always humbled to stand in a gallery filled with your work, and can’t wait to celebrate with you tomorrow.

Washington Post Magazine Mention

The show gets a mention in this weekend’s Washington Post magazine! (Though small and in a weird place, the magazine did in fact credit Russell Brammer with the photo they used, contrary to our earlier rant. Thanks Russell for pointing that out!)

Heather Goss Spills The Beans to Patrick Onofre

Photographer Patrick Onofre had Exposed founder Heather Goss on his Staying In Focus Photography Podcast to talk about Exposed, Ten Miles Square, and how she got into art writing. Patrick has interviewed many local photographers on his show, including several Exposed alumni: Angela Kleis, Jim Darling, Matt Dunn, Yonas Hassen, Pablo Benavente, Mike Hicks, James Campbell, Brandon Kopp, Brian Mosley and  Ryan Maxwell.

If you were ever interested in how we started the show, how James Calder and Heather make it happen every year, and how we choose the photos, this will answer your questions. Thanks Patrick!

Announcing the 2013 Winners

The judging is done. The arguments for and against this photo and that photo are now forgotten. The curating is finally over. The winning images for the seventh annual DCist Exposed Photography Show have been decided!

Our incredibly talented cadre of photographers submitted nearly 600 images to the contest. Somehow, we were able to narrow it down to just 42 winning shots. As in years past, we were so impressed with the fantastic diversity of work depicting the place we all call home — take some time to click the link above and peruse them all.

We are most grateful to our panel of judges: Meaghan Gay, Martin Austermuhle, Pat Padua, Ian Buckwalter, James Calder and Heather Goss. Once again, we’re delighted to be working again with Drew Porterfield and Long View Gallery, who will host us this year from March 27-April 7. We’ll be announcing more details about the two opening nights, so stay tuned here, follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and now even on the exhibit’s standalone website.

If you’re one of the winners, check your email later today for all the details on what you need to do to prepare for the show!
